Business owners in Lane County and the rest of Oregon know how challenging it can be to keep a business afloat and profitable during a struggling economy. Recently, the owner of Excalibur Cutlery & Gifts, based in Eugene, decided to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. He said the economy contributed heavily to his ability stay in business. A landlord for one of his shops recently ended the lease, forcing him to close quickly. He has since decided to close his other eight locations. Their doors were all shuttered on Monday, and final paychecks were sent out to his employees.
No one likes to see a local business go under — especially one like Excalibur, which had been around for 35 years. Unfortunately, difficult economic conditions can leave a business owner no other option. However, many end up finding that there is an upside to filing for bankruptcy.
